Song titles are 'a good marketing tool' – Amaarae

Singer-songwriter Ama Serwah Genfi, alias Amaarae

Amaarae has noted that "good song titles" can serve as an effective way of drawing people to consume one's music.

The Ghanaian-American Afro-Fusion music star, appearing on Accra-based Metro TV's Entertainment Review programme, had been asked how she decides on her song titles – her latest album is called Fountain Baby.

"I think, sometimes, it's in the lyrics," she said thoughtfully. "Sometimes, it's in the concept that I'm trying to portray."

"I have always felt like picking good song titles is a good marketing tool," she noted, explaining that: "If people find the title interesting, they'll check out the song."

Fountain Baby's track 11, Sociopathic Dance Queen, was cited by her host.

"Actually, when we were writing that record," Amaarae excitedly narrated, "as I was writing with my co-writer, he said something – he was like: 'This song is for the sociopathic dance queens' and I was like: 'Boom! That's the title right there'."

She said she reasoned that if a listener sees such a title, their curiosity would pique "and you'll go and listen to it".

"It was the same thing with Sad Girlz Luv Money," she mentioned. "I was very intentional about that title because if you see that, you'd be like: 'I wonder what this sounds like'. So I think it's just good marketing."

She noted that her personal "favourite [song on the Fountain Baby album] now is starting to change every day," however, she revealed that currently, it is track 4, Princess Going Digital.
