Ada Traditional Council scales back 89th Asafotufiami Festival for traditional cleansing and spiritual renewal
The Ada Traditional Council has announced significant changes to the 89th Ada Asafotufiami Festival, declaring this year's celebration a period of traditional cleansing, spiritual renewal and communal reflection ahead of two major milestones in 2027.
In a press release dated July 17, 2026, the Council said the decision forms part of preparations for the 90th anniversary of the Ada Asafotufiami Festival and the Golden Jubilee celebration of the reign of the Paramount Chief of the Ada State, HRM Djetse Nene Kabu Abram Akuaku III.
The announcement was made by the President of the Ada Traditional Council and Paramount Chief, HRM Djetse Nene Kabu Abram Akuaku III, together with the 89th Ada Asafotufiami Festival Planning Committee.
The Council said traditional cleansing rites have, for generations, occupied a sacred place in the cultural and spiritual life of the Ada people, serving as a period of reflection, purification, renewal, reconciliation and reaffirmation of the customs and values that unite the people.
According to the Council, this year's festival will place greater emphasis on the spiritual and traditional essence of the celebration, with less focus on pomp and pageantry, to lay the foundation for the larger celebrations planned for 2027.
As a result, many of the customary, cultural and traditional activities normally associated with the festival will not be observed in their usual form this year. Instead, attention will focus on traditional cleansing ceremonies to be undertaken by the various clans and communities across the Ada State.
The 89th Ada Asafotufiami Festival is scheduled to take place from August 7 to August 14, 2026.
The Traditional Council clarified that the festival's Durbar Day will still be held but will be organised differently to reflect the solemnity and significance of the cleansing period while preserving the dignity and heritage of the festival.
It also assured the public that all approved social gatherings, community engagements, hospitality activities and corporate brand activations associated with the festival period will proceed as scheduled. Businesses, sponsors, exhibitors, partners and collaborators have therefore been encouraged to continue with their planned participation without disruption.
The Council acknowledged the support it has received over the years from government institutions, corporate organisations, development partners, tourism stakeholders, media organisations and community groups, saying their contributions have helped establish the Ada Asafotufiami Festival as one of Ghana's most celebrated cultural events and an important platform for cultural preservation, tourism promotion and community development.
As preparations continue for the 90th anniversary celebrations and the Golden Jubilee of the Paramount Chief, the Traditional Council called on the people of Ada, friends of the Ada State and well-wishers around the world to support and respect the observance of the cleansing rites.
The Council said it remains committed to working closely with stakeholders and partners as preparations continue for the landmark celebrations next year.
