The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has announced that the regional administration will soon demolish structures identified as being built on waterways.

Speaking at the National Day of Prayers and Thanksgiving held in Kumasi, Dr Amoakohene said several of the unauthorised structures are located in Asokwa, particularly behind the walls of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

He indicated that a specialised team has been set up to engage owners and occupants of the affected properties ahead of the demolition exercise, in order to ensure what he described as a more holistic approach.

He also stressed that government would need to put in place strong managerial and social support systems to assist those who may be displaced as a result of the exercise.

At the same event, Apostle Johannes Vegba, the Kumasi North Area Head of the Apostolic Church–Ghana, delivered a sermon calling for national transformation and a reset of societal values.

He urged Ghanaians to re-examine their core values in order to change what he described as the country’s current trajectory.

Apostle Vegba said the deliberate diversion and blockage of waterways for illegal mining and unauthorised construction had contributed significantly to recurring flooding across the country.

He warned that failure to address these behavioural and value-related issues could lead to further environmental and social consequences.

He cited recent floods in Accra and other major cities, which have resulted in deaths and displacement, attributing the incidents largely to human activities.

Beyond environmental concerns, he also condemned corruption and poor work ethic in both the public and private sectors, criticising what he described as apathy among some workers, including a focus on clock-watching and pursuit of unofficial payments.
