Mr Michael Kpakpo Allotey leading the demolition exercise in Accra

The Mayor of Accra, Mr Michael Kpakpo Allotey, on Tuesday led a special task force to enforce the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) building permit regulations, stressing the legal requirement for all developers to secure the necessary permits before starting construction.

The operation targeted a range of development activities, including hoarding, change of land use, renovations, land subdivision, demolitions, billboard installations, and other land-related works.

The enforcement exercise covered communities such as North Kaneshie, Bubuashie, Avenor, and the Industrial Area.

Speaking during the exercise, Mr. Allotey explained that the AMA was acting in accordance with its Bye-laws, 2017 (Building/Physical Development), which under Section 1(1) mandates that “a developer shall apply for a development and building permit before commencing development.”

He urged all developers to comply with the regulations to ensure orderly physical development, safeguard public safety, promote sustainable urban growth, and avoid the sanctions that come with non-compliance.
