Bible Society of Ghana marks 60 years of service

The Bible Society of Ghana (BSG) is celebrating its 60th anniversary, highlighting six decades of dedicated work in making the Bible available, accessible, and relevant to Ghanaians.
Tracing its roots to the 16th-century Reformation in Europe—which sparked a wave of Bible translation and the formation of Bible societies—the BSG’s story in Ghana is deeply connected to the country’s Christian heritage.
According to Rev. Prof. B. Y. Quarshie, former Rector of the Akrofi Christaller Institute, the Bible is believed to have first arrived in the Gold Coast after 1482 through European traders and missionaries.
Initially, its use was confined to Europeans and their children in castle schools, but gradual efforts were made to introduce it to Africans, particularly children.
Over time, the BSG played a leading role in ensuring the Bible was translated and published in local languages.
The full Ghana Bible was published in 1866, followed by versions in Akan, Ewe, Ga, and several other Ghanaian languages. Since then, the Society has continued to revise and update these translations, ensuring accessibility for new generations.
In its 60 years of existence, the BSG has gone beyond translation and publishing to undertake projects that have impacted millions of lives.
These include promoting Bible study, encouraging daily engagement with scripture, and contributing to global Bible work. The Society has also partnered with churches and organisations to strengthen its ministry across the country.
Looking ahead, the BSG has pledged to expand its impact by increasing Bible availability, encouraging deeper engagement with the Word of God, and boosting local support for Bible-related initiatives.
Its vision is to ensure that every Ghanaian Christian has access to the Bible and uses it as a daily guide for life and faith.
The 60th anniversary, therefore, stands as a milestone of faith, service, and commitment—marking the BSG’s enduring role in shaping Ghana’s spiritual and cultural landscape.
