A Chief Inspector of the Ghana Police Service in the Ashanti Region is being investigated over allegations that he owned and rented out unauthorised structures to commercial sex workers at Asafo BB in Kumasi.

The allegations emerged during a demolition exercise carried out by a special task force from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), which targeted illegal structures erected along the Subin Stream behind the COCOBOD building in Adum.

According to the police, the officer, whose identity has not been disclosed, is alleged to have been the owner of several of the structures earmarked for demolition.

The operation was abruptly interrupted after some occupants of the area confronted the demolition team, attacking soldiers and city guards deployed for the exercise.

The group reportedly hurled stones and other objects at the task force, damaging two pickup vehicles and an excavator used in the operation. The vehicles sustained smashed windscreens and punctured tyres.

Three members of the task force, including a soldier, sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive Richard Ofori Agyeman-Boadi has indicated that the Assembly will return to continue the demolition exercise, although the next operation will be carried out without prior notice.

In a statement, the Ghana Police Service said it has launched investigations into the conduct of the officer and described the allegations as a matter of serious concern. The Service said it will provide further updates as investigations progress.

Speaking on Luv FM, the Head of Physical Planning at the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Benjamin Agyenim-Boateng, alleged that the officer owned about 12 makeshift structures within the enclave.
