President Mahama declares 2 national general cleaning days in flood-affected regions
President John Dramani Mahama has declared Friday, July 10, and Saturday, 11 July 11 2026 as National General Cleaning Days in the seven regions affected by the recent floods.
The announcement, made in a statement issued by the Presidency Communications Office on Monday, 6 July, said the exercise will be carried out under the auspices of the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee.
The two-day exercise, themed "Our Actions, Our Future: Cleaning Ghana after the Floods", is intended to mobilise citizens to clean their communities, protect the environment and help safeguard lives following the recent flooding.
According to the statement, the President has directed all government appointees, including Ministers of State, Chief Executive Officers, Members of Parliament, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), as well as heads of public institutions, to actively participate by leading clean-up activities within their respective communities.
The exercise will begin on Friday, July 10, with personnel from the security services, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and waste management companies commencing clean-up operations.
On Saturday, July 11, members of the public will join the security agencies and assemblies to expand the exercise across the affected areas.
The statement said the clean-up will focus on desilting choked drains to improve water flow ahead of further rainfall, sweeping and clearing sand, weeds and debris from major roads, streets and highways, and cleaning public spaces, including markets, lorry parks, recreational parks and communal waste collection points.
All MMDAs have been instructed to work with waste management companies to provide the necessary logistics, including refuse trucks, gloves, shovels and other cleaning equipment at designated collection points.
Assemblies have also been directed to ensure that all silt and refuse collected during the exercise are removed immediately to prevent them from being washed back into drains.
The Presidency described the initiative as a critical national intervention and urged citizens to participate fully, stating that indiscriminate littering and plastic pollution have contributed significantly to blocked drainage systems and preventable flooding.
The statement called on Ghanaians to demonstrate unity and community spirit by supporting the exercise, urging citizens to protect their homes, neighbourhoods and the environment.
