Collapsed Achiase-Anumso bridge cripples transport, trade and healthcare access
The collapse of a crucial metal bridge connecting Achiase and Anumso is severely crippling local transportation and bringing economic activities to a standstill.
This vital infrastructure not only links the Juaben Municipality and the Bosome Freho District but also serves as the boundary between them.
Residents had previously warned that a collapse was imminent, citing the frequent passage of heavy-duty machinery that progressively compromised the bridge's structural integrity.
While illegal mining activities are ongoing in the immediate area, residents clarified that mining was not the cause of the disaster, attributing it entirely to the heavy traffic.
A temporary remedy, attempting to bypass the fallen span by dumping a large volume of sand into the gap, has only worsened the situation.
The sand has dammed the Mentu River, blocking its natural flow and creating stagnant water.
Consequently, during rainfall, the blocked river floods and submerges the road, rendering travel between the districts impossible.
This blockade has severely impacted local livelihoods.
Farmers are unable to transport crops to market during the rainy season, resulting in devastating post-harvest losses, while traders remain stranded with their goods.
Additionally, the disruption has sparked a healthcare crisis, making it difficult for residents to access emergency medical services, including urgent care for pregnant women in labour.
Speaking to Kumasi FM's Elisha Adarkwah, commuters appealed to the government for immediate intervention to rebuild the bridge, restore safe transportation, and revive the local economy.
In response, Juaben Municipal Chief Executive Eunice Ohenewaa Ansu conducted an on-site inspection and pledged the government's commitment to reconstructing the bridge.
However, she expressed deep concern over the ongoing galamsey activities in the enclave, which continue to devastate local lands and water bodies.
