El-Wak stampede: GAF temporarily suspends Greater Accra recruitment exercise, continues in other regions
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced that temporary suspension of its 2025/2026 recruitment exercise, following the fatal incident that occurred at the El-Wak Sports Stadium this morning.
On Wednesday, November 12, 2025, the recruitment exercise was marred by a stampede which resulted in the death of six, as announced by GAF, and the injury of many. Thousands of youth had gathered at the El-Wak stadium to partake in the exercise.
GAF said the halt in the recruitment was "to allow for additional measures to ensure a seamless exercise".
GAF noted, "The process in the other 15 regions will, however, continue as scheduled."
Concerning an in-depth investigation, GAF said, a board of inquiry had been constituted "to unravel the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident".
The statement posted to the armed forces' Facebook, concluded, "The Armed Forces deeply regrets any inconvenience this suspension may have caused the general public, particularly affècted applicants. Applicants will be informed of the date of resumption of the process later."
