Fire guts parts of Makola Market, destroying shops and goods
A fire has swept through parts of Makola Market in Accra, destroying several shops and goods worth thousands of cedis.
The blaze broke out on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, amid heavy rains and spread through sections of the busy commercial hub, sending thick smoke into the air and forcing traders and shoppers to flee the area.
Merchandise and other valuables belonging to traders were destroyed in the fire. The full extent of the damage is yet to be assessed.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) are at the scene working to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby shops and buildings.
Speaking from the scene, ADO1 Alex King Nartey of the GNFS said firefighters observed several gas cylinders inside the affected structures, posing an additional challenge to firefighting efforts.
He noted that a building belonging to Ghana Water Ltd, located adjacent to the structures on fire, had not been affected. He also indicated that a commercial bank situated on the other side of the burning buildings remained intact.
ADO1 Nartey further disclosed that a firefighter sustained what he described as a "life-threatening injury" after a metal component from a hose detached and struck him in the chest. The injured officer was rushed to hospital for treatment.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities are yet to confirm the identity of the affected structures, which included a two storey building.
The incident is still unfolding, and further details are expected as firefighting and investigations continue.
