The Director General of Joint Operations of the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier General Forster Okae-Yeboah, has urged residents in flood-affected communities to cooperate with security personnel as government intensifies a nationwide flood response and clean-up operation.

Speaking during a national briefing on the recent floods, Brigadier General Okae-Yeboah said public cooperation would be essential to the success of the exercise, urging residents to comply with traffic management measures and safety instructions issued by personnel on the ground.

He said the operation involves the Ghana Armed Forces, other security agencies, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and private sector partners, with the assemblies leading clean-up activities in their respective jurisdictions.

According to him, the coordinated effort will focus on clearing debris, desilting drains, restoring damaged infrastructure and reopening inaccessible roads. He added that heavy equipment under the District Road Improvement Programme has been deployed to support the exercise, warning that temporary traffic diversions and restricted access on some roads are expected.

Brigadier General Okae-Yeboah also appealed to owners and occupants of structures located on waterways and drainage reservations to cooperate with the authorities, assuring the public that all operations would be carried out professionally and in accordance with the law.

He commended private sector organisations that have provided machinery, logistics and technical support, and encouraged more institutions to assist the national response.

The military officer further urged residents to help prevent future flooding by keeping drains clear, avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse, reporting blocked drains and unsafe structures, and observing public health guidance.

He said the current exercise forms part of a broader national flood resilience strategy aimed at improving drainage infrastructure, strengthening early warning systems, enforcing environmental regulations and enhancing emergency preparedness.

Brigadier General Okae-Yeboah assured the public that regular updates would be provided through the Emergency Communications Committee as the operation progresses.
