The Ghana Education Service (GES) has strongly denounced the assault on two teachers and the vandalism of school property at Bawku Senior High School, describing the incident as a serious breach of discipline and an attack on the safety of education personnel.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 17, the Service said the disturbances allegedly involved some students of the school who attacked the teachers and damaged school facilities during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Initial reports suggest the unrest may have stemmed from the enforcement of examination rules and supervision measures aimed at ensuring the integrity of the exams.

GES expressed concern over the incident, stating that such behaviour undermines the principles of respect, discipline and responsibility that schools are expected to uphold.

The Service stressed that acts of violence and destruction have no place in the country's educational institutions and warned that misconduct of this nature would be dealt with in accordance with established regulations.

Management also highlighted the troubling nature of the attacks on the teachers, noting that educators carrying out their professional responsibilities must be protected from intimidation and harm.

According to GES, teachers play a vital role in maintaining fairness and credibility in the examination process, making any attack on them a matter of serious concern.

The Service further described the incident as a threat to the safety and well-being of its staff and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a secure environment for both teachers and students.

To prevent further disturbances, security personnel have been deployed to the school to maintain order and safeguard students, staff and examination officials.

GES assured the public that it is working closely with the relevant authorities to investigate the incident and take appropriate action against those found responsible.

The Service also called on students to conduct themselves responsibly and respect school regulations, particularly during national examinations.
