GIDA reveals plans to transform Amrahia Dam into agricultural and recreational hub

The Ghana Irrigation Development Authority (GIDA), in partnership with a private developer, has announced plans to redevelop the Amrahia Dam into a multi-purpose facility aimed at boosting agriculture, promoting aquaculture, and creating recreational opportunities, while safeguarding one of the area’s most critical water resources.

The initiative follows growing concerns over increasing encroachment around the dam, which receives water from the Aburi Mountains and serves as a vital source of irrigation for vegetable farmers and surrounding communities.

Speaking after a tour of the site, GIDA’s Deputy Director in charge of Stream Oversight, Joseph Nartey, stated that the redevelopment project would ensure the preservation of the dam while expanding its functionality beyond irrigation.

He explained that the upgraded facility would primarily support downstream agricultural activities, while also creating opportunities for recreation, fishing, and other environmentally sustainable uses.

Mr Nartey further warned that individuals undertaking developments within the designated buffer zone would be required to halt construction and, where necessary, vacate the area.

Responding to public reports suggesting that the Jolly Homes Estate had been constructed within the dam itself, Mr. Nartey dismissed the claims as inaccurate.

Meanwhile, the Operations Manager for Jolly Homes Estate, Emmanuel Osei Amankra, used the opportunity to debunk claims that the estate is being developed within waterways, as reported in sections of the media. He also highlighted the importance of collaboration in the redevelopment of the Amrahia Dam.
