Ghana card to become key requirement for motor insurance
Beginning January 1, 2026, drivers across Ghana will be required to show their Ghana Card before they can buy or renew any motor insurance cover, the National Insurance Commission (NIC) has announced.
In a statement issued by the Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Dr. Abiba Zakariah, the Commission said the directive is part of broader measures aimed at tightening oversight and improving accountability in the insurance industry.
Under the new guidelines, every individual seeking motor insurance services must present a valid Ghana Card at the time of purchase or renewal. Businesses and other corporate entities will, in addition, be expected to provide their Tax Identification Number (TIN) for all vehicle insurance-related dealings.
The NIC explained that the initiative will help streamline claims processing, strengthen customer identification and anti–money laundering checks, curb insurance fraud, and bring Ghana’s insurance sector in line with international best practices in financial services.
Motorists have therefore been advised to familiarize themselves with the policy and ensure they carry their Ghana Card when accessing motor insurance services once the directive takes effect.
