Government has announced plans to strengthen public transportation by revamping the Metro Mass Transit (MMT) system as part of measures outlined in the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review.

The Finance Minister told Parliament that the poor state of public transport has contributed to high commuting costs and traffic congestion in major cities.

To address this, government will invest in the procurement of new buses and the rehabilitation of existing MMT fleet to expand coverage across the country.

“We intend to solve the transport problem by making MMT buses the backbone of affordable and reliable public transport," the Minister stated.

According to the budget review, the revamped MMT service will focus on key urban routes and inter-city corridors to reduce fares, cut travel time, and provide safer options for commuters.

The Minister added that government will also work with the private sector to improve terminals and maintenance facilities to ensure the sustainability of the service.
