Hassan Ayariga calls for tougher immigration controls to protect Ghana’s sovereignty

Leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), Dr. Hassan Ayariga, has issued a strong call for sweeping measures to safeguard Ghana’s sovereignty, warning that unchecked foreign presence in the country could displace citizens and undermine national identity.
In a press release dated September 30, 2025, Dr. Ayariga described Ghana as a peaceful and hospitable nation but cautioned that its generosity should not be mistaken for weakness.
He argued that rising numbers of foreigners engaging in unregulated businesses, acquiring land, and competing with local entrepreneurs posed a serious threat to the country’s future.
“We must recognise a growing danger.
If we do not act, Ghanaians risk being overpopulated, outnumbered, and displaced in our own homeland,” he stated.
Dr. Ayariga outlined a six-point plan to protect Ghana’s sovereignty and economic space:
Foreign Population Audit — to establish the true number of foreigners living in the country.
Strict Immigration and Residency Controls — including decisive action against illegal entry, overstays, and undocumented settlements, with quotas to regulate long-term residency.
Regulation of Foreign Businesses — reserving certain trades and markets exclusively for Ghanaians.
Land and Property Ownership — ensuring that foreigners may lease but never own Ghanaian land.
Constitutional Safeguards — amending the constitution to reserve top political offices for “true-born Ghanaians.”
Enforcement and Monitoring — placing the Ministry of Interior in charge of oversight and compliance.
“Self-Preservation, Not Hostility”Dr. Ayariga insisted that his proposals were not anti-foreigner but rather necessary to secure Ghana’s long-term prosperity.
“These measures are not acts of hostility. They are acts of self-preservation. Every great nation protects its people, its resources, and its future. Ghana must do the same,” he said.
He added that while foreigners remained welcome in Ghana, their stay and participation in the economy must be on terms that safeguard Ghanaian interests.
The APC leader called on citizens across the country to unite behind what he described as a national effort to defend Ghana’s sovereignty, identity, and prosperity.
“Ghana is for Ghanaians. And as long as we live, we shall never allow our people to become strangers in their own land,” Dr. Ayariga declared
