The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has filed an official complaint with the Ghana Police Service following an incident in which a police officer allegedly threatened staff of a towing company with a firearm during a parking enforcement exercise in Kumasi.

The confrontation reportedly occurred at about 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, at Roman Hill in the city's Central Business District. The incident gained widespread attention after a video capturing the altercation surfaced on social media.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Assembly said personnel from Day and Night Towing Service, a private contractor engaged to enforce KMA's parking regulations, had clamped a saloon vehicle parked in a restricted zone and were preparing to tow it when the incident unfolded.

According to the Assembly, a uniformed police officer, identified as Y.E. Aboagye, arrived at the scene, claimed ownership of the vehicle and questioned the authority of the towing team to remove it.

The disagreement reportedly escalated, with the officer allegedly threatening to shoot one of the towing personnel in the foot if they proceeded with the operation.

The KMA described the alleged conduct as unacceptable and said the matter had been referred to the Ghana Police Service for investigation and any disciplinary or legal action deemed necessary.

The Assembly also dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting its security taskforce was involved in the incident, clarifying that the confrontation involved only personnel from the contracted towing company.

It urged the public to disregard what it described as misleading claims linking the incident to the KMA Security Taskforce and encouraged reliance on verified information while investigations continue.

The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing traffic and parking regulations in accordance with the law, stressing that such exercises would continue to be carried out professionally and within the legal framework.
