The leadership of the Health Accounting Staff Association of Ghana (HASAG) at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in the Greater Accra Region, has secured an interlocutory injunction on the appointment of a new director of finance.

The association secured the injunction from the Accra High Court to put on hold any attempt by the CEO and the board to appoint a new director of finance.

There is a high possibility of industrial unrest at Ghana’s premier teaching hospital over the appointment of a director of finance for the facility.

According to some aggrieved staff of the hospital, even though there’s a suitable candidate in the person of Mr Lucas Amewudah, who has been acting as the director of finance since 2021, he has been allegedly sidelined by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Korle Bu, Dr Opokuware Ampomah, for a new person to be considered for the position.

According to the workers, all efforts to have the CEO and the board of the hospital backtrack on their decision have proven to be futile even though the attention of the board has been drawn to the fact that due process was not followed in the appointment.

“We are moved by the fact that there are a lot of chartered accountants in the institution who could have applied but they didn't in support of Mr Lucas Amewudah,” the aggrieved workers said.

“Another fact is that all external persons appointed as directors of finance previously have all had their appointments terminated in a short time as they end up messing up the finance of the institution,” they revealed.

HASAG has directed all members across the country to wear red bands in solidarity with their colleagues at Korle Bu.

A letter written to the Minister of Health, Mr Kwaku Agyemang Manu by the Health Accountants Staff Association of Ghana, has raised questions about why the CEO has failed to confirm Mr Amewudah as the substantive director of finance after he has worked at the department for several years and acquired a lot of experience.

A similar letter written by the Health Services Workers Union of TUC to the CEO and sighted by Class 91.3 News has also warned about a possible breach of industrial peace at Korle Bu.

The union is, however, seeking the audience of the CEO for a dialogue on the matter.

According to the members, the conclusion of a general meeting which was held on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, has it that the union will not accept the fresh appointment that is being made by the CEO.
