The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has announced the termination of 278 small-scale mining licenses across the country due to regulatory breaches and expiration of operational permits.

According to a statement from the Ministry, the decision follows a comprehensive review of mining activities conducted by the Minerals Commission, which uncovered widespread violations of environmental and safety regulations, as well as failure by some operators to renew their licenses within the legally required time frame.

Mr. Buah emphasised that the move forms part of the government’s broader effort to sanitise Ghana’s small-scale mining sector, protect the environment, and promote responsible mining practices.

“The era of unregulated mining is over. Every operator must comply with the law, protect our water bodies, and ensure mining contributes positively to local livelihoods,” the Minister said.

The Ministry noted that while legitimate miners who comply with the country’s regulations will continue to receive government support, those who flout the rules will face strict sanctions, including suspension or permanent revocation of licenses.

The Lands Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to working with traditional authorities, local Assemblies, and security agencies to curb illegal mining — locally known as galamsey — and to restore degraded lands in affected communities.

This latest action is expected to send a strong signal to operators within the sector that compliance with mining laws is non-negotiable as Ghana continues its efforts to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability.
