President John Dramani Mahama has issued a firm directive to the Ministry of Roads and Highways to prioritise the rehabilitation of critical farming and feeder roads as part of his government’s $10 billion Big Push infrastructure programme.

The directive comes in response to mounting complaints from farmers and residents in rural communities, particularly in the Western North Region, about the poor state of roads connecting farms to markets.

Addressing a gathering in Sefwi Juaboso during his Thank You Tour, President Mahama described the situation as urgent, emphasising that these roads are central to national productivity and economic development.

“These roads are not a luxury; they are a necessity.

They carry cocoa, timber, food, and people.

Without them, rural economies suffer,” he stated.

The President assured constituents that contractors would return to the site without delay.

He revealed that the Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has confirmed the availability of funds, with a commitment to pay contractors within two weeks of submitting their certificates.

Among the roads targeted for immediate reconstruction are key routes in Enchi, Elubo, Dadeso, Acuantumra, Ajuafua, Osei, Kodokoro, Seshiboikwa, and Asankragua, as well as feeder roads in Sui, Bosunkwanta, Bonzan, Essam, and Bia West.

The Big Push programme, set to allocate at least $2 billion annually starting with the 2025 budget, forms a cornerstone of President Mahama’s strategy to modernise infrastructure and accelerate economic growth.

“If a project is stalled after sod-cutting, it won’t be due to non-payment.

If the contractor isn’t working, then something else is wrong—and that will be addressed,” he cautioned.

President Mahama reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to using infrastructure development as a tool to unlock the full potential of rural communities and ensure inclusive national growth.
