Mahama pledges immediate relief and long-term plan to tackle Accra flooding
President John Dramani Mahama has announced a comprehensive plan to tackle Accra's recurring flooding, saying the government will combine immediate relief measures with long-term urban redevelopment to reduce the city's flood risk.
Speaking after touring flood-affected communities in the capital, President Mahama said authorities would identify and clearly demarcate blocked drains and waterways across the various metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies to facilitate their clearance.
He said the government remains committed to implementing both short-term interventions and sustainable long-term measures to protect lives and property from future flooding.
The president noted that demolishing structures alone would not resolve the problem if the resulting debris was left in waterways, as this would continue to obstruct the flow of water.
He described the initiative as a 20-year development programme, adding that planning and design work is already underway. Once completed, the government will demarcate the area, construct roads, and extend essential utilities, including water and electricity, to support residential and commercial development.
