An aunt of former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has made a passionate appeal for a rigorous state investigation into the recent shooting incident involving her niece, revealing that an astonishing 48 bullets were fired during the violent confrontation.

Speaking to the media, Nana Pomaa Nhyira described the incident at the Kwabenya residence as a terrifying "life-and-death situation" and emphasized that the former lawmaker is incredibly fortunate to be alive.

“Forty-eight bullets were fired at Adwoa Safo. If she had been seriously injured, we would be telling a different story today,” Nhyira stated. “We thank God that she was not seriously injured [fatally] because by now we could have lost her.”

Concerns Over Bail for Accused Persons

The family’s public appeal comes on the heels of a decision by the Adenta Circuit Court to grant bail to Ms Safo's younger brother, Israel Kwadwo Safo (popularly known as Akofena), alongside eight other individuals accused of participating in the violent clash.

The court granted each of the nine accused persons bail in the sum of GH¢500,000 with two sureties. While Nana Pomaa Nhyira noted that the family respects the court’s decision, she strongly insisted that due process must be aggressively pursued without compromise to ensure true justice is served.

She explicitly called upon the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the judiciary to treat the case with the absolute highest level of gravity.

“This is a life-and-death situation. I plead with the Inspector-General of Police and the judges handling the matter to look into it carefully and deliver fair judgment,” she said.

Questioning the Use of Force

Nhyira fiercely questioned the extreme level of force deployed during the incident, arguing that no disagreement could legally or morally justify a barrage of gunfire aimed directly at a person.

“If someone had committed an offence, would it justify firing shots aimed at the person? The authorities must investigate this matter thoroughly,” she added.

Background of the Dispute

The life-threatening confrontation, which occurred on Sunday, June 21, 2026, stems from a deeply fractured succession conflict within the Kristo Asafo Mission following the death of its founder, Apostle Professor Kwadwo Safo.

Ms Safo had reportedly gone to the Kwabenya residence to serve a court injunction blocking a planned installation ceremony for Israel Kwadwo Safo as the church's new leader. The encounter rapidly deteriorated into gunfire, leaving the former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection hospitalised with bullet pellets and shattered glass fragments lodged in her head, for which she was recently transferred to the Bank Hospital for specialist surgery.

With 9 suspects now out on substantial bail, the Kwadwo Safo family is watching the police and judiciary closely, insisting that the sheer volume of ammunition fired at the former MP demands definitive criminal accountability.
