Police invite Akofena over Kwabenya shooting
The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has invited Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena to assist with investigations into a shooting incident that occurred at Kwabenya on Sunday, June 21.
The invitation was disclosed by the Director of Public Affairs of the Regional Police Command, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, during an appearance on Nhyira FM’s Kro Yi Mu Nsem morning programme on Monday, June 22.
According to Supt Obeng, Akofena has been asked to report to the Regional Command as part of ongoing investigations into the incident.
“The Ghana Police Service has invited Mr Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena to assist with investigations into a shooting incident,” she said during the programme hosted by Barima Kofi Dawson.
She further revealed that six private security officers arrested in relation to the incident remain in police custody while legal procedures continue.
Supt Obeng said a search operation conducted by investigators resulted in the recovery of five pump-action guns, a Taurus pistol loaded with seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, an additional magazine containing five rounds of 9mm ammunition, and communication devices.
She stated that any individual whose assistance is required in the investigation will be invited by the police and that anyone found responsible for wrongdoing will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The police spokesperson also confirmed that former Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection and former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo was injured during the incident but remains in stable condition.
She said Adwoa Safo continues to receive medical attention and that the Police Service is being updated on her condition.
Providing details of the incident, Supt Obeng said officers from the National Operations Directorate and the Intelligence Directorate, who were on special duty, responded to a distress call from a residence in Kwabenya.
She said preliminary findings indicate that a ceremony was underway at the residence of Mr Tamakloe Safo Jehoshaphat, also known as Akofena, when Adwoa Safo reportedly arrived and sought entry but was refused access.
According to Supt. Obeng, armed security personnel at the residence allegedly fired their weapons during the incident, causing injuries to Adwoa Safo. Her vehicle was also found to have sustained multiple gunshot impacts.
“Based on information made available to the Police Command this morning, the former MP’s condition is reported to be stable,” she said.
She urged members of the public to avoid speculation and refrain from circulating unverified information while investigations continue.
Supt Obeng assured the public that the Police Service would conduct a thorough and transparent investigation and communicate developments through official channels.
Meanwhile, the family of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo has dismissed claims by his son, Israel Nana Kwadwo Safo, to the leadership of the Kristo Asafo Mission, maintaining that the succession arrangements put in place by the founder remain valid.
In a statement issued on Sunday, June 21, the family said former Dome-Kwabenya MP Sarah Adwoa Safo remains the recognised Head of the Kwadwo Safo Family and continues to act as the principal representative of the family’s interests.
