The Deputy Ranking Member on Parliament's Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Committee, Nana Asafo-Adjei Ayeh, has called on the government to provide more details on recent diplomatic developments between Ghana and South Africa following concerns over xenophobic attacks.

Speaking on JoyNews' The Pulse on Tuesday, 7 July, the Bosome Freho MP said the Minority needed more information about Ghana's decision to defer a proposed state visit by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

He said the information currently available was insufficient for the Minority to properly assess the situation and offer informed support or recommendations to the government.

His comments follow Ghana's decision to defer the proposed visit amid concerns over xenophobic attacks on Ghanaians and other African migrants in South Africa.

Meanwhile, the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said relations between Ghana and South Africa remain cordial despite the developments.

He explained that the decision to defer the visit was taken to protect Ghanaian citizens and should not be interpreted as a breakdown in diplomatic relations.

Mr Kwakye Ofosu added that although Ghana believes South Africa could have done more to protect Ghanaians and other foreign nationals, the government remains committed to maintaining a strong and mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries.
