The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Eastern Region is set to embark on a large-scale tree planting exercise aimed at reclaiming degraded lands and reducing the impact of floods and strong winds in disaster-prone areas.

The initiative will focus on flood-prone zones as well as sites devastated by illegal mining and sand winning, particularly in Kyebi and its surrounding communities.

The programme is being carried out in collaboration with the Okyeman Abodiesahene, Barimah Okoh Minta, the Forestry Department, District Assemblies, and the regional task force on illegal mining.

Speaking to the media, Eastern Regional NADMO Director, Mr. Cudjoe Adukpo, said the project seeks to restore degraded lands, seal dangerous pits left behind by illegal miners, and protect communities from the adverse effects of flooding and windstorms during the rainy season.

“We hope to reclaim all the lost vegetation and return the fields to green as they once were.

Our focus will be on planting indigenous tree species to help quickly restore biodiversity,” he stated.

Mr. Adukpo stressed the importance of community involvement, noting that local residents will play a central role in the reforestation efforts to ensure sustainability and provide socio-economic benefits.

“We wish that more of the indigenous species were replanted so that we can maintain biodiversity. Involving local communities will also provide livelihoods and encourage them to own the project,” he added.

He further explained that NADMO, in partnership with corporate bodies, will continue prioritising disaster prevention by combining reforestation with broader environmental protection measures to mitigate flooding, property destruction, and the displacement of residents.
