Majority Chief Whip slams GBA over 2025 annual conference speakers list

Member of Parliament for South Dayi and Majority Chief Whip, Mr  Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has raised concerns over what he describes as a clear display of bias by the Ghana Bar Association (GBA) in the organisation of its 2025 Annual Conference.

In a statement on his X handle, the legislator noted that from 2017 to 2024, the then-sitting President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was “nearly always the Special Guest of Honour and Speaker” at the GBA’s yearly gatherings. However, he pointed out that in a sharp departure from tradition, the President of Ghana is missing from the advertised list of speakers for this year’s event.

Mr. Dafeamekpor expressed particular surprise that the GBA leadership had instead chosen to invite the President of the Bar Council of England & Wales, an association he claims “recently attacked this Government without any provocation.”

In a sarcastic suggestion, the MP called on the GBA to also extend an invitation to the President of the Commonwealth Lawyers Association, to “add effect” to what he described as a pattern of bias.

Accusing the GBA of partiality, Mr. Dafeamekpor said: “Your unalloyed bias against President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress government is too glaring to be ignored now.

You can continue to act as a wing of the main opposition party New Patriotic Party(NPP), to do its bidding; we are ready for you.”

The GBA is yet to respond to the concerns raised by the legislator.
