A political analyst and lecturer at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Dr. Kwabena Bomfeh Jnr, has warned that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s prospects in the 2028 presidential race will hinge as much on the image and cohesion of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as on his individual credentials.

Dr. Bomfeh made the remarks in an interview, where he likened the task ahead of the newly elected flagbearer to carrying a banner that must appeal to the public.

He explained that even the most capable candidate could struggle if the party he represents is perceived as divided or unattractive to voters, stressing that the NPP must first address its internal challenges.

According to him, the party needs urgent restructuring and reconciliation to present a united front ahead of the next general election. He noted that internal rifts and unresolved issues within the NPP could weaken Dr. Bawumia’s appeal if not properly managed.

Dr. Bomfeh further argued that winning back public trust will require more than policy proposals, urging the party to demonstrate a clear understanding of the everyday concerns of Ghanaians and show practical commitment to solving them.

He said the flagbearer must not only take action but must also be visibly engaged in efforts that bring party supporters together and reposition the NPP as responsive to the needs of the electorate.

The comments follow Dr. Bawumia’s victory in the NPP presidential primaries held on Saturday, January 31, 2026. The former Vice-President emerged winner with 110,643 votes out of 195,901 valid ballots cast nationwide, based on official figures from the Electoral Commission.

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong finished second with 46,554 votes, while Dr. Bryan Acheampong secured third place with 36,303 votes. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum placed fourth after polling 1,999 votes, with Kwabena Agyei Agyepong coming fifth with 402 votes. A total of 196,462 votes were cast, with 561 rejected.

Dr. Bawumia’s win confirms him as the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2028 elections as the party prepares for a bid to extend its stay in government beyond two terms.

Dr. Bomfeh concluded that while Dr. Bawumia’s experience and competence are not in doubt, restoring confidence in the party remains a decisive factor, noting that credibility depends on harmony between what the party says and what it does.
