The Ashanti Regional branch of the National Security Secretariat has launched a special operation to clamp down on commercial transport operators charging unauthorised fares across the Greater Kumasi area.

The exercise, led by the Ashanti Regional Security Liaison Officer, Capt. (Rtd.) Kwame Jabari involves more than 20 personnel from the regional office, supported by district-level security units.

The operation targets commercial drivers, conductors, and loading boys who arbitrarily inflate transport fares, with offenders to be arrested and handed over to the Ghana Police Service for prosecution.

According to National Security, the initiative is aimed at easing traffic congestion and reducing the burden on commuters.

Capt. Jabari said the Secretariat is also working closely with Metro Mass Transit to provide transport services from selected communities to Kejetia and other destinations as part of efforts to stabilise fares and ensure orderly operations at bus terminals.

“We are going to partner with the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), we are going to partner with the police, arrest those who are charging illegal prices and ensure there is sanctity within the bus terminals,” he said.

He added that the operation has already commenced, with security teams deployed to various bus terminals during peak periods.

“We are starting it today, so we are going to do evenings and early mornings.

Early in the morning, there will be a team at the various bus terminals,” Capt. Jabari stated.

National Security says the sustained presence of its officers at transport hubs is expected to deter illegal fare hikes and bring relief to commuters in Greater Kumasi.
