President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to improving the welfare and professional development of teachers across the country.

This assurance came during a courtesy call by the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on Wednesday.

The meeting, held in Accra, focused on issues central to the teaching profession, including working conditions, remuneration, and opportunities for career growth.

President Mahama described the engagement as insightful, acknowledging the invaluable contributions of teachers to Ghana’s educational and national development.

He commended GNAT for its continued investment in the welfare of its members and the advancement of the teaching profession.

“I expressed my sincere gratitude to the GNAT leadership for their relentless efforts in shaping the future of our nation,” he said.

“Our teachers are the bedrock of Ghana's education system and essential partners in nation-building.”

He emphasised that any government serious about national progress must place teachers at the centre of its development agenda.

According to him, ensuring that teachers are fairly compensated, work in conducive environments, and have access to continuous professional development is not just a campaign pledge but a national imperative.

President Mahama assured the GNAT leadership that under his administration, teachers’ concerns would be prioritised, and deliberate efforts would be made to elevate the teaching profession.

The GNAT leadership welcomed the engagement and reiterated their commitment to collaborating with stakeholders to promote quality education in Ghana.

They also highlighted key areas that require urgent attention, including teacher accommodation, logistics for teaching, and policy reforms to enhance motivation and retention.
