RTI Commission marks 5th anniversary and 2025 RTI month celebration
The Right to Information Commission (RTI) has commemorated its 5th anniversary alongside the 2025 Right to Information (RTI) Month with a stakeholders’ event held at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra on October 23, 2025.
The event, which brought together government officials, traditional leaders, members of the media, and civil society organisations, was held under the theme: “Championing Transparency and Accountability Through Access to Environmental Information in the Digital Era.”
Dignitaries in attendance included the Executive Secretary of the RTI Commission, Ms. Genevieve Shirley Lartey, the Attorney-General, Mr. Dominic Ayine, the Presidential Spokesperson, Mr. Felix Ofosu Kwakye, and the Ga Mantse, His Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II. and other stakeholders
In her keynote address, Ms. Genevieve Shirley Lartey highlighted the Commission’s milestones over the past five years, describing the journey as a reflection of Ghana’s unwavering commitment to transparency, accountability, and participatory governance.
She reaffirmed that the RTI Commission continues to translate the provisions of the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989) — anchored on Article 21(1)(f) of the 1992 Constitution — into a living reality for all Ghanaians by ensuring every citizen enjoys the constitutional right to access information.
Speaking at the event, Government Spokesperson Mr. Felix Ofosu Kwakye emphasised the importance of the Right to Information Act, noting that it complements the freedom of speech and expression under Article 21(1)(a) and the freedom and independence of the media under Article 162 of the Constitution.
He stated, “Without access to information, the exercise of these freedoms has become hollow.
The Right to Information, therefore, serves as a deliberate and enabling right that gives life to public discourse, investigative journalism, and informed participation in governance.
It ensures that opinions are grounded in facts, not propaganda, and that citizens can meaningfully engage in state decision-making.”
The celebration provided a platform for key stakeholders to renew their commitment to deepening open governance and strengthening public access to information, especially in an era driven by digital transformation.
