Samuel George affirms commitment to Ghanaians over telecom industry pressures
Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the Ghanaian people, stating that his allegiance lies with the public, not Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).
Mr. George emphasised that the interests of ordinary Ghanaians will always take precedence in government decisions concerning the telecommunications sector.
“I am the Minister for Communications for the Republic of Ghana, and my fidelity is to the Ghanaian people,” he declared.
“The interests of ordinary Ghanaians will always come first in every policy decision we take.”
The Minister made the remarks in response to questions about balancing regulatory enforcement with cooperation from industry players, particularly amid lobbying efforts from MNOs.
He noted that while the government welcomes the participation of the private sector, it remains firm in its mission to protect the public good.
“We welcome private sector participation, but they must understand that this space will not be run solely for profit at the expense of the public good,” Mr. George stressed.
He further pledged transparency and fairness in managing the telecom space, asserting that consumer protection will remain a top priority.
“The days when telcos could run roughshod over regulatory frameworks are over,” he stated. “We are enforcing the rules and demanding accountability.”
Mr. George’s comments signal a strong regulatory stance by the government, aimed at ensuring that the telecom sector operates in a manner that prioritises fairness, transparency, and the welfare of Ghanaian consumers.
He spoke during an appearance on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, April 15.
