Santasi–Asokwa traders demand compensation before road project evictions
Traders operating along the stretch between Santasi Roundabout and Asokwa Interchange have appealed to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to honour its promise of compensation before they are relocated from the area.
The KMA has directed the vendors to vacate the stretch by January 20, 2026, to pave the way for the construction of a dual-carriageway project aimed at easing traffic congestion in Kumasi.
However, the affected traders say they are frustrated by what they describe as delays and a lack of concrete action on compensation, despite earlier assurances from the Assembly.
According to the vendors, they are willing to cooperate with the road construction project but insist that compensation must be paid before they leave their trading spaces.
“We have been promised compensation, but nothing has been done so far,” one trader said.
“We cannot vacate without it.”
The traders have therefore called on the KMA to fulfil its commitment, warning that they will resist relocation if compensation is not paid as promised.
The dual-carriageway project forms part of efforts by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion along the busy Santasi–Asokwa corridor.
