UNIMAC-IJ students urgently appeal to President Mahama for footbridge at Dzorwulu campus

Students of the University of Media, Arts and Communication – Institute of Journalism (UNIMAC-IJ), formerly the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ), have issued an urgent and heartfelt appeal to President John Dramani Mahama and the Ministry of Roads and Highways for the construction of a pedestrian footbridge at the university’s Dzorwulu campus.
The Dzorwulu campus is situated along the busy N1 Highway, a stretch of road with heavy vehicular activity throughout the day. Students are compelled to cross multiple lanes of fast-moving traffic without the safety of a designated pedestrian bridge, putting their lives at significant risk.
This daily ordeal is particularly dangerous for students commuting from areas such as Kasoa, who must navigate the highway during peak traffic hours. The situation is especially hazardous near the 335 Bus Stop and opposite Villaggio, where there is no formal crossing system in place to protect pedestrians heading toward central Accra.
Students report that the lack of a footbridge has turned their commute into a perilous undertaking. Vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, persons with disabilities, and others are at even greater risk.
Speaking anonymously to Accra FM’s Samuel Payitey, several students described the situation as life-threatening, endangering the safety of hundreds of students every single day.
While it is unclear whether previous appeals have been made, the students' message is clear: this is a call to action to prevent avoidable injuries or loss of life. They are pleading for immediate intervention to ensure the safety and well-being of the entire university community, students, staff, and visitors alike.
But joining us on the line is the SRC President Bernard Afful Ansah popularly known as Kofi Nyamekye for more clarity on this new development.
