Vice President urges collective action to keep ghana clean

Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called on Ghanaians to play an active role in maintaining a clean environment, stressing that poor sanitation poses a threat to everyone, regardless of who is responsible for the problem.

She made the appeal on Friday while participating in the National Two-Day Clean-Up Exercise at the Nungua lorry terminal in Accra.

Addressing residents and volunteers, the Vice President said environmental sanitation is a shared responsibility and should not be viewed as the sole obligation of government.

She noted that careless waste disposal by individuals often creates wider environmental challenges that ultimately affect entire communities, including people who may have done nothing to contribute to the situation.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang warned that indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains continues to worsen flooding by obstructing the natural flow of water during heavy rains.

According to her, changing everyday sanitation practices is essential to reducing the recurring incidence of choked drains and flood-related disasters.

The nationwide clean-up campaign, organised by the Post-Flood Mitigation Committee, forms part of ongoing efforts to encourage public participation in environmental sanitation and minimise the risk of flooding in vulnerable communities.
