Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called for sustained efforts to recruit, support and retain more women in Ghana's security services.

Speaking during a visit to the Ministry of the Interior, she said she was encouraged by the presence of young women and stressed the need to help them progress in their careers.

"We need to grow them, we need to support them, retain them, to let them go as high as they can go," she said.

The vice president later welcomed information that women make up a significant proportion of the Ministry's workforce and encouraged management to continue supporting them.

She expressed confidence that the women would continue to distinguish themselves if given the necessary opportunities.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang said promoting women within the security services should remain a priority for the ministry.
