The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has confirmed it is investigating the incident at Heath Goldfields’ Prestea concession, where three illegal miners were reportedly trapped in an inactive underground section of the mine.

The victims are said to have been trapped in an inactive underground section of the mine after using unauthorised routes to access restricted areas.

Their deaths follow widespread reports in the Bogoso-Prestea enclave suggesting that up to 11 illegal miners—known locally as galamseyers—may have been trapped after parts of an abandoned mine caved in over the weekend.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, the Ministry said a report on the incident at the Bogoso-Prestea Mine had been received.

“We are working closely with all the relevant agencies to verify the facts and support ongoing emergency efforts.

Our thoughts are with the families and communities affected.

We will provide an update as soon as the situation is confirmed by the technical teams on the ground,”

Heath Goldfields Ltd. had earlier confirmed the deaths in a press release, explaining that the victims accessed restricted areas of the mine through unauthorised routes.

The company expressed condolences to the bereaved families and the Prestea community, and pledged full cooperation with authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, the Minerals Commission, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

The company also emphasised its commitment to stringent safety protocols and responsible mining practices while supporting the community during this difficult period.

The incident underscores the persistent dangers of illegal mining in Ghana and the need for rigorous safety enforcement in mining operations.
