A significant number of miners, believed to be illegal small-scale operators, are feared dead following a suspected gas-related incident at the Bogoso-Prestea Mine in the Western Region.

The tragedy is reported to have occurred when an unidentified smoke, possibly from a blast, filled the underground tunnels with toxic gas, causing suffocation.

The incident is believed to have taken place at levels 8 and 9 of the mine, which is currently managed by Heath Goldfields.

Conflicting reports surround the exact death toll. Some sources indicate as many as 30 fatalities, while others suggest a figure of 11.

As of 7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, three additional bodies were retrieved from level 9 and brought to the surface, separate from earlier recoveries.

The incident has been officially reported to the Prestea Police, who are now handling the case.

No official statement has yet been released by the mine operators or authorities.

The Bogoso-Prestea Mine has been the subject of legal disputes, with Heath Goldfields recently taking over management amid an ongoing court case with previous lease holders, Blue Gold.
