Yagbonwura calls for stronger Gonja-Ashanti cooperation during Manhyia visit
The Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, has called for closer collaboration between the Gonja and Ashanti kingdoms, saying their historic relationship should continue to serve as a foundation for peace, unity and development.
His remarks were delivered by the Yapeiwura, A.B.T. Zakaria, during a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
The Yagbonwura said the visit was intended to reaffirm the long-standing friendship between the two traditional kingdoms and renew their commitment to mutual respect and cooperation. He expressed confidence that the relationship would continue to grow and strengthen ties between their people.
He acknowledged the role played by the Asantehene in promoting peace across the country, particularly alongside the Yagbonwura and the Nayiri, describing their leadership as an important contribution to national stability.
The Gonja overlord also paid tribute to the Asantehene's involvement in resolving the Dagbon chieftaincy dispute, saying the outcome demonstrated the value of dialogue, wisdom and effective traditional leadership.
Turning to issues affecting traditional governance, the Yagbonwura identified land disputes as a growing concern for many traditional areas. He said unresolved land conflicts can disrupt development, discourage investment and create divisions within families and communities.
He urged the Gonja and Ashanti kingdoms to deepen cooperation by exchanging knowledge and best practices on land administration and peaceful dispute resolution.
According to the Yagbonwura, stronger collaboration between the two kingdoms would not only benefit their traditional areas but also support peace, stability and sustainable development across the country.
