A/R: Police arrest 44 in crackdown on alleged drug network targeting university students
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team (SOT), in collaboration with the Ashanti Regional Police Command, has arrested 44 suspects following intelligence-led operations targeting alleged drug trafficking activities in parts of the Kumasi Metropolis.
The operations, conducted between July 3 and July 5, covered identified hotspots including Emena New Site, Boadi, Abuabo, Ash Town, Kodie, Bremang, Pankrono, Gyinyaase and surrounding communities.
According to the police, the suspects comprise 41 men and three women who were arrested for various narcotics-related offences.
Police said a major outcome of the operation was the dismantling of an alleged drug distribution network suspected of producing, distributing and selling narcotic-infused products to university students. Intelligence gathered by investigators indicates that the network had been operating around university communities.
Among the principal suspects is 24-year-old Emmanuel Duah, who police allege produced cannabis-laced toffees, advertised them on online platforms and sold them primarily to students.
Police also identified Richard Boateng, 45, as a suspect alleged to have produced cannabis-infused alcoholic beverages for distribution to students, while Frederick Agyei is alleged to have been a principal supplier of cannabis to university students.
The operations led to the recovery of 200 sachets of 225mg Tramadol (Trama King) tablets, quantities of 250mg Tramadol tablets, 400 sealed wraps of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic substances, locally prepared fruit juice known as "Femude" suspected to contain narcotic substances, a medium-sized double-door refrigerator containing locally prepared concoctions suspected to be narcotic substances, quantities of Rizla rolling papers, a sealed black polythene bag containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic substances, and nine casino jackpot machines believed to have been used in illegal activities.
Police said all exhibits have been secured for forensic examination and evidential purposes, while the suspects remain in custody assisting with investigations.
The Ghana Police Service said it is pursuing additional suspects believed to be connected to the alleged drug distribution network with the aim of dismantling the entire supply chain.
The Service assured the public, particularly students, parents and educational institutions, of its commitment to protecting schools and communities from illicit drug trafficking and related criminal activities. It also commended members of the public for providing intelligence that supported the operation and encouraged continued cooperation with law enforcement.
