(Audio) Coup plot: "I'm strong; you can't gag, break innocent me" – Agordzo
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dr Benjamin Agordzo, who has been charged with abetment of treason over his alleged involvement in a planned coup plot to destabilise the country, has said he is innocent of the charges levelled against him, insisting nobody can gag or break him.
The embattled senior police officer made the comments after he was arraigned at a Kaneshie District Court on Wednesday, 6 November 2019.
He told Class91.3FM’s court correspondent Mercy Obeng-Akrofi in an interview outside the court that: “I’m as strong as anything; I’m not going to be bogged down. Nobody can gag me. I have not committed any crime; I have done nothing wrong. The president called on us to be citizens, so, when I expressed my opinion on a WhatsApp platform, [it was] unrelated to any alleged coup. Nobody should bog me down and I will stand for this till the end, they cannot break me down at all and I am as strong as anything,” he said.
Meanwhile, the lead counsel for the suspect, Mr Martin Kpebu, is challenging the jurisdiction of the Kaneshie District Court in hearing the case.
The prosecutor prayed the court to remand the suspect into the custody of the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) but the lead counsel challenged that saying the court, presided over by Eleanor Botchwey, lacked jurisdiction over the matter.
The court will continue hearing the case on Friday, 8 November 2019, during which a pronouncement will be made on the case and the charges against the suspect read.
Meanwhile, the suspect will remain in BNI custody.
Dr Agordzo is a serving police officer and a former Director of the Transformation Office of the Ghana Police Service.
