Six members of the Ghanaian Rugby community are facing charges in an Accra Circuit Court for allegedly spreading false information about Herbert Mensah, the President of the Africa Rugby Association.

The accused individuals include Bismark Amponsah, a 40-year-old teacher; Abdul Aziz Issah, a 46-year-old Information Technology (IT) professional; Michael Ako Wilson, a 34-year-old transport manager; James Nana Akwandoh Nunoo, a 49-year-old teacher; Emmanuel Ekow Mensah, a 24-year-old surveyor; and Alexandra Dorpenyo, a 33-year-old plumber.

The charges include conspiracy to commit offensive conduct, with bail set at GH¢50,000.00 and three sureties each.

Issah is separately charged with unlawful access or interception of information, while Wilson, Ekow Mensah, and Dorpenyo face an offensive conduct charge.

Nunoo is facing a fraudulent communication charge, and Amponsah is involved in a separate case for conspiring to commit money laundering with Nunoo.

All six have pleaded not guilty, and their next court appearance is scheduled for February 29, 2024.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Maxwell Oppong, the accused, who are members of the Ghana Rugby fraternity, allegedly planned to spread false information and organise a street protest against Mr Mensah, the President of Rugby Africa, due to a disagreement with him.

The group allegedly developed write-ups and posted them on their Facebook pages to tarnish Mensah's image.

Despite a court injunction sought by Mr Mensah to prevent such actions, the accused continued to spread the alleged disinformation, leading to eventual legal action against Mr Wilson at the Osu Police Station.

DSP Oppong reported that Mr Ekow Mensah and Mr Dorpenyo posted derogatory articles on their individual Facebook pages. Following an investigation, the accused individuals were charged with offenses and brought before the court
