In a major development in the ongoing investigation into the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Hussein-Suale, the Madina District Court in the Greater Accra Region has formally discharged Mr. Daniel Owusu Koranteng after the office of the Attorney-General (A-G) found insufficient evidence to sustain the charges against him.

The decision, delivered by Her Worship Susan D. Nyakote, followed a detailed review of the case docket and legal advice issued by the Attorney-General to the prosecution.

The court held that the prosecution’s case failed to meet the evidentiary threshold required to proceed with charges of abetment of murder and murder.

According to the A-G’s legal opinion, a meticulous analysis of the police investigation revealed that the call records used to implicate Mr. Koranteng were inconclusive and did not establish any direct or circumstantial connection between him and the commission of the crime.

Additionally, none of the police sketches generated from eyewitness descriptions bore any resemblance to the accused.

Acting on the Attorney-General’s directive, the prosecution informed the court that its investigative focus would now shift toward identifying and apprehending the two unidentified gunmen believed to have carried out the fatal attack on Hussein-Suale, who was shot and killed in January 2019.

Mr. Koranteng appeared in court wearing a white shirt — a symbolic gesture of vindication and peace — and was accompanied by his legal team, Emma-Jean Markin,  and Frederick Gurah Sampson.

The court’s decision marks a legal and moral victory for Mr. Koranteng, who has consistently maintained his innocence since his arrest.

The ruling underscores the fundamental legal principle that an accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Beyond exonerating Mr. Koranteng, the discharge serves as a renewed call for a more focused and effective pursuit of justice for Ahmed Hussein-Suale, whose killers remain at large six years after his death.
