E/R: One dead, three injured in shooting at Odwira festival in Aburi
What was meant to be a joyous cultural celebration turned tragic at the Odwira Festival in Aburi-Ahwerase when a dispute between two traditional leaders spiralled into violence, leaving one person dead and three others injured.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 22, when Nana Semeshia Ohene Asah Krofa II, the Abakomahene of the Asona family of Ahwerase, attempted to perform traditional rites to lift the ban on noisemaking ahead of the festival. A disagreement reportedly broke out between the Abakomahene and the Baamuhene over who held the rightful authority to conduct the ritual.
Eyewitnesses say the argument quickly escalated, with some young men allegedly brandishing firearms.
In the ensuing chaos, four individuals were shot, one of whom later died while receiving treatment at the Presbyterian Hospital in Aburi.
The Eastern Regional Police Command has since arrested 34 suspects in connection with the incident.
According to police reports, two firearms — a pump-action gun and a pistol — were retrieved from the scene and are currently undergoing forensic examination.
Speaking to the media, Superintendent Ebenezer Tetteh, the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, condemned the incident and assured residents of swift justice.
“We are determined to ensure that calm is restored and that anyone found culpable will face the full rigours of the law,” he stated.
Superintendent Tetteh further emphasised that security has been intensified throughout Aburi-Ahwerase and surrounding communities to prevent further disturbances during the festival period.
Despite the tragedy, authorities have assured residents and visitors that the Odwira Festival — a celebration deeply rooted in unity, purification, and cultural pride — will continue under strict police supervision.
Residents have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security personnel as investigations continue.
The police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and protecting lives during and after the festival.
