Akufo-Addo grants presidential charters to 14 private universities
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has awarded presidential charters to 14 private universities, granting them autonomy to award their own degrees and diplomas.
The ceremony, held on Thursday at the Jubilee House, marked a significant milestone in Ghana’s tertiary education sector.
Speaking at the event, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the importance of the charters, stating that they symbolize the universities’ transition into fully autonomous institutions.
He described the development as a testament to the government’s commitment to promoting academic excellence, innovation, and nation-building.
The institutions granted charters include:
National Defence College KAAF University College Heritage Christian University College Ensign Global College University College of Gold Coast Knutsford University College Thrivus Institute for Biomedical Sciences and Technology Nobel International Business School Entrance University College of Health Sciences Accra Metropolitan University College African University College of Communications Garden City University College Family Health University College Academic City University College
President Akufo-Addo described the occasion as a "transformative milestone in the history of Ghana’s tertiary education landscape."
He commended the institutions for their vision, perseverance, and dedication to achieving the highest standards of education.
“The grant of a Presidential Charter represents the highest recognition a tertiary institution in Ghana can attain,” he said.
The President explained that the charter process is rigorous, requiring institutions to meet stringent criteria set by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC).
These criteria include excellence in governance, quality assurance, academic delivery, research, and community engagement.
The recognition of these institutions reflects their role in advancing tertiary education and contributing to national development.
President Akufo-Addo’s administration has consistently prioritized education as a cornerstone for the country’s growth and progress.
