Free SHS: Infrastructure dearth “undermines quality” – Zanetor

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Klottey Korle, Ms Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings has said the high number of students enrolled under the free Senior High School (SHS) programme vis-à-vis the insufficient number of teachers and inadequate infrastructure “undermines the quality of education delivery in the country.”
The MP made the comments at an orientation and handing over ceremony of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) in Ho, Volta Region on Wednesday, 27 November 2019.
She also wondered why the current government has failed to complete the Community Day Senior High Schools started under the Mahama administration.
Dr Agyeman-Rawlings also spoke about how parents and guardians now have to bear the cost of accommodation for their wards posted to other regions as day students.
She said that situation defeats the purpose of the community day schools.
The MP has also called on Ghanaians to demand accountability from their leaders, including those in government.
Dr Agyeman-Rawlings called on Ghanaians to imbibe the virtues of probity, accountability and social justice.
She explained that social justice means irrespective of one’s social status or location within the country, they must have access to equitable share of the basic necessities of life such as quality healthcare, education, employment and good living standards.
The legislator further stated that people have the right to demand accountability from persons in high office in order to be informed on the current happenings.
“When we talk about issues of accountability, it is ensuring that you have a right to question people in high office about what is going on and to understand what is happening. Accountability only happens when there is transparency,” she stated.
She indicated, however, that the citizenry rather shy away from exercising their right in that regard.
