The Ghana School of Law (GSL) is expected to admit 800 students and call 700 persons to the Bar in 2022.

This was disclosed by the Minister for Finance Ken Ofori-Atta during the presentation of the 2022 budget statement in Parliament, on Wednesday, 17 November 2022.

The Minister however indicated that the law school will conduct an entrance examination for 2,500 applicants, from which the 800 students are expected to be admitted.

Mr Ofori-Atta stated: “In 2022, the Ghana School of Law expects to conduct entrance examinations for 2,500 applicants and anticipates to admit 800 students into the Ghana School of Law while 700 students are expected to be called to the Bar.”

The Minister also disclosed that the General Legal Council (GLC) is expected in 2022, to handle 180 disciplinary proceedings against lawyers.

790 out of 2,824 representing 28percent of Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree holders were admitted to the GSL in 2021.

312 persons were called to the Bar in the same year.

Initial results released by the GSL on Tuesday, 28 September 2021, for this year’s entrance exam, suggested that 790 out of the total 2824 candidates, met the entry requirement.

However, after pressure from the public, the GLC further released results indicating 1,289 candidates met the minimum pass requirement of 50 per cent, which is the known pass standard for all previous entrance exams conducted.

Thus, 499 of 1,289 candidates were denied entry to the GSL.

The GLC, however, further released a notice to indicate a new standard of a pass of 50percent in each of the two sections A and B in the exam denoting reasons the 499 were not admitted.

Meanwhile, the 499 law students who were denied entry this year, will be admitted, as the GLC has agreed to do so.

This was revealed on Wednesday, 17 November 2021, by the Lawyer for the 499 students following a meeting between the representatives of the aggrieved students and their lawyer, representatives from the GLC and the Attorney General (AG).

According to the lawyer for the 499 students, Martin Akpebu, although the GLC has agreed to admit the students, they are yet to be informed about the start date for their admission into the GSL.
