Gov’t appeals to CETAG to call off strike
The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has appealed to members of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) to call off their ongoing strike, assuring them that government was taking steps to address their long-standing concerns.
According to the minister, negotiations were underway to resolve issues raised by CETAG, including matters stemming from a 2022 National Labour Commission ruling.
“We are negotiating. There were issues that the National Labour Commission made a declaration and award to CETAG that have not been respected by government since 2022. We are seeing how we can remedy the situation,” the minister noted.
He added that government had requested a short window to finalise steps toward resolving the impasse.
“We have also requested that they consider calling off the strike, and we have requested for two weeks to see what the state can do. But we will fix it within the two weeks,” he assured.
However, CETAG President, Maxwell Bunu, said the leadership cannot call off the strike without first consulting its members.
“We are grateful to him for the reception. The strike was not my personal decision, so we will have to revert to NEC and Council,” he explained.
He emphasised that the association would take feedback from its governing bodies before making any announcement.
“We will consult with NEC, and we will listen to what they will say. We will do that within the week,” he said.
Bunu stressed that their priority was not simply ending the strike, but securing a concrete resolution to their grievances.
“It is not about calling off the strike; it is about resolving the issues. The minister has said his own, and we will consult council within the week to take a decision,” he noted.
