KNUST vice-chancellor reappointment: Court to deliver ruling July 30

The reappointment of Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson as Vice-Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is under threat due to a court injunction filed by university alumnus Kofi Clement Ohene Asare.
Set to begin on August 1, 2024, Prof. Dickson’s second term now faces significant legal scrutiny.
Mr. Ohene Asare has requested an interlocutory injunction, alleging breaches of the university's statutes in the reappointment process.
He asserts that the prescribed procedures, including the formation of a seven-member Search Committee to identify suitable candidates and the advertisement of the Vice-Chancellor position for other applicants, were not followed.
In his filing, Mr. Ohene Asare described the actions of the university and its governing council as “unlawful,” “illegal,” and “unconscionable.”
He further alleges that despite these procedural breaches, former Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, who chairs the university's council, and Prof. Dickson are intent on proceeding with the reappointment.
“Despite the illegality of the reappointment, the former Chief Justice, Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, and Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson are bent on proceeding to act on the purported renewed appointment,” Mr. Ohene Asare stated in his filing.
The High Court in Kumasi is set to hear the case and deliver its ruling on July 30, 2024.
