Krobea Asante disturbances: Court grants students GHS2k bail each
The students who were arrested for being at the centre of the riot that occurred at the Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational School at Asokore in the Ashanti Region have been granted bail by the Asokore Mampong District Court.
The students, numbering 43, were each granted a bail of GHS2,000 with one surety to be justified by parents or guardians, Thursday, 2 February 2023.
The students will also have to report to the Asokore Police once a week together with their parents or guardians.
The Court also directed that the students sign a bond.
The students are facing provisional charges of conspiracy to commit a crime to wit rioting, causing unlawful damage and stealing.
The case has been adjourned to Friday, 3 March 2023.
The Krobea Asante Technical and Vocational School was closed down “with immediate effect,” following violent demonstrations by students of the school, Sunday, 22 January 2023.
The school was closed down based on advice from the Sekyere East District Security Council.
Some 43 students of the school were arrested for vandalism.
The students around 1 a.m. on Sunday, 22 January 2023, went on a rampage and destroyed school properties including vehicles.
They were protesting poor examination results for the year 2022.
School properties destroyed included four school vehicles: a bus, two pickups, and a Nissan Patrol SUV.
Windows of the school buildings; and other items at the school’s store were also destroyed.
Meanwhile, a 5-member committee has been set up to investigate the disturbances that occurred at the school.
The committee which was inaugurated on Wednesday, 25 January 2023, by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, has two weeks to complete its findings.
The 5-member committee include Chairman of the Committee, Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice Samuel Obeng Diawuo; Retired Methodist Bishop,Rt. Rev. Nuh, Ben Abubekr; Retired Regional Commander of NIB, Mr. David Adu-Osei; Acting Ashanti Regional Director, Ghana TVET Service, Mr Richard Addo Gyamfi; and Former Principal, Kumasi Technical Institute, Dr Abeiku Apprey.
