Parliament’s Education Committee Chair calls for dissolution of Bolgatanga Technical University Council
The Chairman of Parliament’s Education Committee, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to dissolve the Governing Council of Bolgatanga Technical University over what he describes as unlawful actions.
His call follows the Council Chairman’s decision to remove the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Samuel Alnaa, over allegations of procurement irregularities.
Although the Vice-Chancellor has been accused of procurement-related misconduct, Mr Nortsu-Kotoe said the proper procedure required the Council to investigate the allegations and submit its findings to the Minister for Education.
Instead, he said, the Council Chairman proceeded to dismiss the Vice-Chancellor, demote two directors, suspend several lecturers and issue warning letters to some staff members.
Mr Nortsu-Kotoe said these actions violate the university’s governing statutes and undermine academic independence.
He has therefore urged the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to reinstate Professor Alnaa and initiate a fresh, independent investigation into the allegations.
